Making Maps

Make and/or find two maps, at minimum, for your global issues project presentation.  Download and/or copy/paste them into a PowerPoint presentation.  Then print the PowerPoint (using the Handouts-2-per-page format; DO NOT PRINT TWO FULL PAGES OF SLIDES).

The Show-®-World link is a great place for most everyone to start.  Some of you will also note that specific atlases are linked to this blog.  You should be able to find multiple maps for your research.

Those of you with topics related to the following–

–will find World Bank maps at the links above.

EarthPulse at National Geographic’s website will be of interest to those needing maps related to:

  • population growth
  • deforestation
  • fishing
  • water

The  Online Atlas of the Millennium Development Goals of the World Bank has maps related to these goals:

  • Eradicating poverty and hunger
  • Achieving universal primary education
  • Promoting gender equality
  • Reducing child mortality
  • Improving maternal health
  • Combating disease
  • Ensuring environmental sustainability
  • Developing a global partnership (i.e. debt and aid)

Maps related to multiple topics is available at the World Data Center for Human Interactions in the Environment.

    Be sure to look at your scoring guide to see how important maps are to your final presentation.  For many of you, two maps will not be sufficient to show the global nature of your problem or issue.

    • 2nd period maps are due on Monday, November 8th.
    • 7th period maps are due on Monday, November 15th.

    Global Issues Project

    Today in class we continued our work on our global issues project.

    We made sure everyone has a book checked out, found three new resources, and discussed the work to date on the project including the Issues and Controversies notes.  (These last two are in the gradebook.)  These came from the Facts on File database from the SHS Library home page.

    Reading log for the books will be available on Wednesday in class.

    Finally, summaries of three new sources are due on 10/12.  Suggested sources at this stage are YouThink, the World News Digest, and the UN Global Issues.  (See the links section of this blog.)

    Today we started our population unit by exploring the ideas of population density, population growth, life expectancy, and population structure.   In doing so, we solved quick jigsaw puzzle maps of the night lights of the United States, watched a classic video on the exponential growth of Earth’s population, examined life expectancies from a range of countries, and made a quick population pyramid of our class.  While exploring these topics, we used the presentation from the PRB for a framework, but we also took ideas and information from other sources such as NASA.  On Friday 9/4/09 we will finish exploring population structures and pyramids and then discuss fertility and urbanization.  Finally, we will complete a reading guide on One Billion and Counting from Human Geography in Action.  This will prepare us for a computer investigation that we will complete on 9/9/09.

    In Class Happenings on August 28, 2009 at 12:03 am

    We are off to a great start.  On Wednesday, August 26th, students brainstormed the top 20 global issues facing the world at this point in time.  In groups, they classified these issues and made poster-sized graphic organizers of them.  We will soon post photos of that work.

    On Friday the 28th students will do a fast write about the global issue most important to them as individuals.   We will also begin to discuss the semester-long Global Issues Project, which will culminate the last week of the semester in a global issues forum.

    Students, please remember to get course outline signed (by yourself and a parent) and turned in to the box in the classroom.
